The Benedictine Abbey of Saint James was founded in 1015. Today, only the splendid church remains, rebuilt in the 16th century in the Flamboyant Gothic style. The 12th-century Romanesque avant-corps has been preserved, and a Renaissance portal was added in 1558. A true architectural gem with its stone lacework and fully painted net vault, the church is among the most beautiful in Belgium. Its interior contains an exceptional heritage. Admire the 16th-century choir windows, including the remarkable window depicting the ancient trades of the city, the 14th-century monks' stalls, the organ and its Renaissance case dating from 1600, the 17th-century Baroque statues by the famous sculptor Jean Del Cour, the choir gallery with its double spiral staircase, and more.
The church is also a prestigious cultural venue hosting numerous concerts and performances.
Every year, from November to March, the church hosts the Liège Organ Festival (www.festivalorgueliege.be).
