Enclos des fusillés de la citadelle de Liège

The Enclos des Fusillés in Liège is a small cemetery located in the Citadel Park. It contains 415 graves of people who were executed or shot by the Wehrmacht or the Waffen-SS during the Second World War, as well as the grave of Mathieu Voncken, the chaplain of the Liège Citadel. The enclosure and its cemetery are part of the remaining structures of the former citadel’s Saint-François bastion.

Access is through the cemetery, which includes 416 graves marked with crosses. However, only 98 people, in addition to Chaplain Voncken, remain buried there; the other bodies were returned to their families. Beyond the cemetery lie the honour lawn and the site of the execution posts, followed by a walled enclosure—known as the parade ground—with the underground passage through which the condemned arrived from Block 24. A second walled enclosure, accessible from the first via a staircase, served both as an execution site and as a mass grave.
